From two performances of The Apocalypse, to new opportunities to explore Steiner Speech and Michael Chekhov’s acting technique, as well as a collaboration with Michael Chekhov Studio Liverpool, here’s what’s coming up...
The Apocalypse: Are We Living in Apocalyptic Times?
With the words Apocalypse and apocalyptic on many people's lips today as a way of describing the uncertain world in which we are living, The Speech Ensemble is bringing the King James translation of the Book of Revelation, or The Apocalypse, to Stroud and London.
Both spoken and sung, with music composed especially for this production and a broad variety of percussion instruments, the performance invites audiences to immerse themselves in the searing imagery of the four riders, the battle between Michael and the dragon, the downfall of evil in all its forms and the birth out of heaven of the New Jerusalem, bringing light out of darkness and harmony out of disarray and conflict.

Steiner Speech for Stage and Screen- Contemporary Texts
I’m also delighted to be teaching a new series of four full-day workshops at the New Actors Centre, exploring Steiner Speech for Stage and Screen through contemporary texts.
The workshops are designed as a complete journey, but each can also be taken individually.

Across the four sessions, we’ll explore:
STYLE | Saturday 3rd October
How is dramatic speech different to other styles of speaking? We’ll explore tools for expressing thought through speech and sharpening our speaking for stage and screen.

SOUNDS | Saturday 31st October
Exploring consonants and their impact on character, and how vowels can bring greater authenticity to our speech and a character’s emotions.

GESTURES | Saturday 28th November
Discovering the six speech gestures and using the body as a practical tool to transform the voice.

LAYERING | Saturday 19th December
Bringing style, sounds and gestures together while working with participants’ individual contemporary texts.
All workshops run from 10.00am–5.00pm.

Please bring a contemporary text that you would like to explore.
For more information. Booking is through the New Actors Centre website.
Please note that you will need to become a member of the New Actors Centre to attend. Membership is £15 for a term or £40 for a year, giving you access to all their classes at reasonable rates.

The Essentials in Twelve Steps: Michael Chekhov’s Acting Technique
If you’re interested in exploring Michael Chekhov’s acting technique in greater depth, I’m also teaching The Essentials in Twelve Steps.
Rather than approaching the technique in isolation, these twelve full-day workshops create a progressive journey through three key stages:

Preparing → Transforming → Creating Performance

We’ll begin with the actor’s body, movement and gesture before moving into character, imagination, speech and psychological gesture, and ultimately explore how these elements can come together in performance.
The twelve steps will take place across October, November and December, with each day offering an opportunity to experience the work practically and apply it to your own acting.

Please bring both a monologue and a scene to work on, soft-soled shoes and clothes suitable for movement.
You can discover all twelve steps, dates and full workshop details on the Performing Arts International website.

And Finally… Michael Chekhov Studio Liverpool
I’m also delighted to be teaching a full-day workshop for Ben Phillips at Michael Chekhov Studio Liverpool.
Ben is a theatre maker, performer, director and acting and movement coach who searches for the line between tragedy and comedy. Through Michael Chekhov Studio Liverpool, he is creating a regular space for professional actors, performers and those interested in the work to explore the Michael Chekhov technique in practice.

Alongside my full-day workshop, Ben has his own programme of weekly Friday evening classes and full-day workshops coming up.
If you’re in or around Liverpool and would like a space to explore your craft, develop your imagination and experience Michael Chekhov’s work, do take a look at what Ben has coming up.
