When training actors at both Dartington Hall, Devon, UK, and in Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA, Michael Chekhov invited Alice Crowther, a teacher of Steiner’s approach to speech, known as Creative Speech in the UK, to give regular classes as a full member of the teaching faculty. Ms. Crowther worked in the Chekhov Theatre Studio until it closed in 1942.

Sarah Kane is a graduate of a full-time training in this approach to speaking; she has also been working with Michael Chekhov’s approach to acting for many years and has spent much time researching the links between the two approaches that at their heart are ultimately the same.

In the seven sessions we will be using Chekhov’s terms to approach the art of speech and speaking developed by Steiner for stage and screen acting: An understanding of Michael Chekhov’s various techniques is a prerequisite to make participation meaningful.

Please be ready to work with movement and bring a monologue that you know by heart and wish to explore from new perspectives using Creative Speech. In each session we will be working with the text that each participant brings to apply the techniques and principles inherent in Creative Speech; then, in the final session we will only be working with applying to the text any of the tools already explored.

There is no charge for the Q & A that ends the sequence of sessions.

Does your speaking voice let you down? Does it not allow you to be truly who you are? Do you feel that it could do more for you to express what you both think and feel, as well as your intentions? That it does not express the totality of yourself in all kinds of different life situations?

If you are looking for ways of developing and strengthening your voice, this introductory course can put you on that path: it offers creative and playful keys that are at the same time entirely practical and can lead to rapid changes in the quality of your voice.
It is first and foremost for anyone seeking to transform their voice, to bring new life and expression to it and to build true individual self-confidence through discovering its power and beauty. You can achieve amazing things with your voice!

It is also for lecturers and public speakers, even in the simplest of settings, offers writers new insights into speaking their own writings and helps storytellers, poets and any other performers working with the spoken word, both online and in person, to give freshness and vitality to whatever words they choose to speak.

Please join me for four 90-minute sessions to explore the foundations of this approach, first developed 100 years ago but as fresh today as it was then. Please be prepared to engage in gentle movement in the sessions and bring four lines of a simple text, such as a nursery rhyme or simple story or fable, that you know by heart and will be comfortable playing with, in as many ways as your creativity allows!
I can say I really enjoyed the sessions- a taster to inspire further work. I liked your words about the need for truth in language especially today. Thank you.

If you are wondering how to bring new life to the words you speak, an approach that sees the activity of speaking as having its origins in movement and gesture may be helpful in freeing your voice so that it can become expression of everything living within you.

Developed by Rudolf Steiner as a series of movements that encompass the vast range of archetypal vocal qualities, the specific movements have the capacity to transform our speaking voice: firstly, they can imbue it with new life and colour, giving it authenticity, and then awaken concrete qualities that will resonate with the context or character you want to perform.

We will be exploring approximately one gesture per session; please bring a dramatic text with which you can explore the varying inner qualities the individual gestures allow to come to life.

This course is both for those who have done an introduction to Steiner’s Creative Speech either with Sarah Kane or elsewhere or who have a background as actors to Michael Chekhov’s approach to acting and theatre.

Deep within ourselves are buried tremendous creative powers and abilities. But they remain unused so long as we do not know about them, so long as we deny them.

Michael Chekhov
Art is born of the union of the physical world and the spiritual world and their mutual fructification. For in art the external form is imbued with spirit and the spiritual content is clothed in external form.
