Please be ready to work with movement and bring a monologue that you know by heart and wish to explore from new perspectives using Creative Speech. In each session we will be working with the text that each participant brings to apply the techniques and principles inherent in Creative Speech; then, in the final session we will only be working with applying to the text any of the tools already explored.
When training actors at both Dartington Hall, Devon, UK, and in Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA, Michael Chekhov invited Alice Crowther, a teacher of Steiner’s approach to speech, known as Creative Speech in the UK, to give regular classes as a full member of the teaching faculty. Ms. Crowther worked in the Chekhov Theatre Studio until it closed in 1942.
Sarah Kane is a graduate of a full-time training in this approach to speaking; she has also been working with Michael Chekhov’s approach to acting for many years and has spent much time researching the links between the two approaches that at their heart are ultimately the same.
In the seven sessions we will be using Chekhov’s terms to approach the art of speech and speaking developed by Steiner for stage and screen acting: An understanding of Michael Chekhov’s various techniques is a prerequisite to make participation meaningful.

The four sessions introduce Rudolf Steiner's Creative Speech and will explore the foundations of this both refreshingly innovative yet little known approach to speech and speaking: articulation and breathing, voice placements and voice or speech gestures.
This creative exploration invites you take a fresh look at what speaking is and explore texts from an unfamiliar perspective. The course is for anyone looking to develop their speech and make their voice more expressive and authentic, be they professional actors, teachers, business speakers or individuals wanting to strengthen their self-confidence and inner resilience.
