Artistic exploration of Michael Chekhov's approach to acting & theatre

HOW CAN I BECOME A TRULY CREATIVE PERFORMING ARTIST?

The nine sessions aim to introduce participants to and deepen their understanding of the strongly creative and highly artistic techniques developed by Russian actor Michael Chekhov in the middle of the twentieth century. Their purpose is to inspire and empower actors for their future work. They have been growing in popularity since the 1990s.

Following are details of forthcoming workshops, and how to book:

Where to begin? Just imagine!

How do I start my journey towards becoming an artist? Or how can I reliably awaken and enliven the artist already alive within me? We will be engaging with our imagination as a way of stimulating our creative selves and exploring the transformative power of the imagination when applied to movement.

Feelings: How do we awaken them?

Feelings are the most unreliable aspect of our creative selves: just when we think we have got an emotional handle on something, it slips away, as if vanishing into the mist. Chekhov offers some reliable and practical tools that give rise to authentic inner experiences in just the moment we need them.

The magic of space

Good or bad, spaces can have a life of their own, and in our artistic work they can support us or restrict and undermine us; characters can also be in tune with the life of a space or live entirely at odds with it. We’ll be exploring the creative potential of the space around us, both up close and at a distance, as well as our own and a character’s relationship to it.

What is a gesture?

Gesture is at the core of Chekhov’s collection of practical and inspiring creative tools: we’ll be exploring what gestures are and how to shape them, finding out what makes them work as a transformative instrument, practising simplifying the process of creating three-dimensional, living, breathing characters.

Creating and exploring character 1

The psychological gesture will be at the centre of this day of exploration, not just the full-bodied movement but also the qualities that make it as specific as we need it to be as actors. We will also be investigating the archetypes and their gestures as tools with which to widen and deepen our under-standing of a character.

The Four Brothers

The four brothers are four tools for the actor’s creative individuality: they allow us to take the greatest risks when exploring and creating character, scene and text because they give us the means to both dive fully into the character’s inner life and completely transform, but they also allow us to return to ourselves at the end of any exploration, rehearsal or performance.

Exploring the life of words

Although speech was not something that Chekhov taught himself in his training, the tools he evolved also have the power to transform and enliven the words an actor speaks: we’ll be exploring how, for example, the qualities of movement or atmospheres or gestures can colour a character’s words in unexpected ways.

Creating and exploring charater 11

Working with the Imaginary body and the imaginary centre of a character are the two additional paths Chekhov created for developing and individualising characters: this workshop will introduce both these imaginative instruments and apply them in improvisation and to text.

The creative process: Creating a character

In the final workshop we will be pulling the threads together and working on individual characters in greater depth: how can we use the variety of tools that Chekhov gave to actors to get to know and then create a character that has life on stage or on screen? To which of the tools does an individual character respond?
